Auditions-Grp Kids 600x350

Auditioning with the Hillsboro Community Youth Choir

Auditions generally take place in June, August, and January and are required for students in Grades 5-12 wishing to enroll in our Premiere and Encore Choirs.

Auditions are available by appointment with the Artistic Director. New singers join the choirs in September and January. Admission to the Premiere and Encore choirs is based on interest, commitment, and musical ability.

No auditions for Prelude Choir members

Please Note: Prelude Choir (Grades K-4) members are NOT required to audition. We just want the little ones to come and have fun singing without any pressure.

Auditions are available on a rolling basis, and new singers generally join the choirs in September and January. Please check the calendar for audition dates.

What happens in an audition and how long will it take?

Students will be coached through the audition process, which takes about 15 minutes, by our Artistic Director. Students will learn if they are selected for Premiere or Encore after their audition.

  • Introductions: Name, grade, school, and any music experience.
  • Student will be coached how to sing a neutral vowel to find the student’s lowest and highest singable note to determine their vocal range.
  • Three random notes will be played and the student will be asked to sing them back. This will determine if the student can retain and match pitch.
  • The Director will coach the student through the song, “America the Beautiful.” This portion of the audition is to make sure the student can sing a melody while being accompanied by the piano.
  • Lastly the student will be asked to sing, “Happy Birthday,” to the piano to check if the student has the ability to start and end a familiar song in the same key.

Admission to the choir is based on interest, commitment, and musical ability.

No prepared song is necessary, and both beginning and experienced singers are welcome.
